A truck accident on State Highway 58 3.2 miles East of Highway 202 flooded parts of Tehachapi with cars and trucks late Thursday morning (September 24) as all Westbound traffic was diverted onto Highway 202. All available parking space adjacent to the freeway was jammed with trucks waiting to get back onto the freeway. The situation continued into the late afternoon. Cars, RV's and light trucks poured out of town on Woodford-Tehachapi road to get around the accident and return to highway 58 at Keene, eight miles West of Highway 202. Drivers of heavy trucks, however, could only choose between waiting for Highway 58 to open up or making a long trek back via Mojave, Southbound Highway 14, Highway 128 and finally down "the Grapevine" into Bakersfield. In spite of the massive influx of vehicles, traffic was orderly and drivers seemed to deal with it calmly (for the most part).
