Golden Empire Appaloosa Horse Club is hosting an All Breed Schooling Horse Show Series. These shows are an opportunity for horse owners of all breeds, riding levels and displines to get experience in the show ring. These shows also give the equestrian the opportunity to meet other horse owners, join horse clubs and have a fun relaxing day. The first show in the series is scheduled for Sunday March 15, the second is Saturday June 6 culminating with the last show on Saturday October 10. These shows are being held at Lawson's arena on the corner of Fairfax and Hermosa Roads. Check in at 8 am with the show beginning at 9 am. Each show will award 1st through 6th place in each class and High Point awards, then an accummulate points will be gathered for special Hi point awards to be given out at the October show.

Special classes that are particular to the Appaloosa breed, such as the most Colorful and Heritage class will be offered to all breeds. All breeds of horses have color or coat patterns that they are known for and heritage of where the breed originated, a history of its beginning followed by a journey of how it came to be the horse it is today. This in particular is what the heritage class is about.

For example, the first evidence of the spotted horse, the Appaloosa, can be found in cave paintings dating from around 18,000 BC at Lascaux and Peche -Merle in France. North American Appaloosas were introduced by the Spanish to the Nez Perce Indians. They practiced selective breeding hundreds of years ago, gelding inferior appaloosa stallions and selecting the best appaloosa mares to produce a combination of war horse, race horse, hunting horse and long distance mount.

This breed slecetion provided by the Nez Perce tribe explains the Appaloosa's excellent versatility today. Appaloosas are used in circuses, parades, and other show events. They are also often used as pony horses on race tracks, since appaloosas remain calm under pressure.

Appaloosas make excellent youth horses due to their excellent temperament and sure footedness. They can also be trained in driving, jumping, trail, cattle events and reining. Appaloosa horses do remarkably well in both western and English riding events, as well as appaloosa racing events.
