A Voice for Nicholas......

A voice for Nicholas

There is nothing quite as pure as the sound of a child’s laughter as they shriek with joy in the carefree freedom of play. We see them frolic in the school yards and sail into the great blue propelled on the seat of swings in playgrounds in towns all across the country. Our souls breathe a sigh of nostalgia as we are momentarily transported to a time gone by. The child within us stirs as personal memories briefly flood our consciousness. There is a sense of hope and possibility enveloped within the innocence of children at play. These are the children we choose to see.

Where are the children we choose not to see…where is Nicholas? This one time chatty, loving, skinny five year old wants you to see him…to hear his story and give his life a legacy of value. With tremendous heart felt compassion…I offer you Nicholas’ story.

A kindergartener by trade, Nicholas was a skinny, energetic, loving, five year old boy. He lived with his mother and doting grandmother for most of his life. Friendly and out going, he had a quick smile and a playful demeanor. His mop of dark hair wildly tousled the top of his head giving credence to the gleam in his dark eyes. Life was as it should be for a child…carefree and innocent.

Like the unexpectedness of a sudden summer thunderstorm, the winds changed and so did the course of his life. His mother met someone. The dynamics of the relationship moved him out of his grandmother’s home and into an apartment with the new couple. Shortly after the move there seem to be a change in Nicholas…a dimming of his inner light…a withdrawal of his outward connection. As the days passed he seemed to weaken…bruises appeared on his body. His dark locks drifted to the floor. He no longer felt well enough to go to school. The frequent baths he took with the stranger washed the light completely out of his eyes. With swelling and cuts to his little boy parts, sitting was uncomfortable. The days drug. An injury to his ankle would not support his weight; dragging himself on the floor was required to get around. Still no medical help was sought by his mother. He had not seen his grandmother for weeks, as she was not allowed to visit. Lying on his bed one night he drifted off to sleep. As morning dawned, the smells of breakfast cooking drifted into his room arousing him from his slumber. A rush of nausea swept over him. He had not eaten much in days. Feeling ill he was left to lie on his bed. After breakfast the couple decided to go to the movies leaving Nicholas to stay home alone. This would be Nicholas’ last day…he became an angel that day.

As the story goes, they returned home from the movies to find Nicholas gone. Days would pass before the grandmother pushed to see him. The mother stated he was taken by CPS. This story shortly unraveled and the hunt for Nicholas commenced. After a brief search and some police work, the final chapter of Nicholas story was revealed. Upon return from the movies, the stranger had found him not breathing; so he wrapped him in a rug, drove him to a dumpster, and threw him away.

I’ll be your voice sweet Nicholas…I’ll be your voice
