Danae Jarrett, UC Davis student

College student from Bakersfield to Rome

From June 19-July 16 former Ridgeview High School student, Danae Jarrett will have the unique opportunity of traveling to Italy with a group of 24 students and a Professor with the University of California, Davis Summer Abroad Program. Through lecture, discussion, and field trips, students will explore Italian civilization and culture. The emphasis will be on achievements in literature, art, philosophy, and socio-political institutions as well as Italian history, especially the Roman contributions to these fields. Rome, the “Eternal City,” will be the classroom for study in this hands-on cultural and educational experience. Students will also focus on the assessment of the impact of regional autonomy on Italian cultural life from the Middle Ages to the present.
All of her life, Danae has dreamed of expanding her knowledge and broadening her understanding of culture on a global level, however, she has not traveled outside of the U.S. because of financial hardships; She will no longer let these hardships hold her back. She has now completed her first two years at UC Davis and she is finally able to pursue her dream. As Danae majors in Communications and focuses on earning a double minor in Women’s Studies and African American Studies she looks forward to engaging in research and studies to embellish her skill set. Danae plans to graduate in the fall of 2012 and hopes to continue her education by earning a Master’s Degree at a prestigious school of journalism. This opportunity to study abroad will definitely be of benefit to her future career goals within this field.
In order for this trip to be a success, she would greatly appreciate your assistance. Danae is looking for sponsors to support her trip, which totals $8,476. The program fees include a public transportation pass for Rome, transportation and lodging for an Amalfi Coast excursion, three daily meals for the duration of the trip, entrance to all museums and sites associated with class excursions, health insurance, accommodations for the program dates, round trip airfare, passport, textbooks/supplies and emergency funds. Approximately $1,500 of the $8,476 total is geared toward her round trip air travel. This amount of money is desired as soon as possible (preferably no later than mid April) so that she may secure her flight and travel plans. The remaining balance is due June 17, 2011.
