This latest winter storm caused the closure of Tehachapi Willow Springs Road, also referred to as the back road to Mojave or to the Antelope Valley. Many motorists try to use this road when Highway 58 is closed or delayed due to icy conditions. While the road was clearly signed as closed, vehicles continued to go around the barricade in an attempt to climb the pass. As a county worker was trying to get the area clear of snow and ice, vehicles continued to pull around him, his job may have gone quicker if he wasn't delayed by traffic. People don't realize the closure is for their own protection. What you cannot see from the location of the barricade, are severe icy conditions further ahead. Its a location of many accidents over the years, sometimes deadly, a place where turning around is most often dangerous, if not impossible. The California Highway Patrol occasionally parks beyond these barricades and writes citations for those who choose to ignore the road closure.
