On October 5,2010 my husband and I were planning on summiting Mt. Whitney only to be turned around on the trail because of Snow and Ice.
This was my husbands second time summiting and would have been my first. The forecast stated only a few inches of snow at 12,800 feet elevation but we encountered approximately 12 inches at Outpost Camp (10,000 feet elevation.) We set up camp and took a nap only to awaken with more snow on the ground.
We saw more and more people coming down the mountain that going up and decided to head back too.
We were very disappointed by the storm but the snow was beautiful as we hiked down in the dark with our headlamps showing the way.
We try again next year.
