BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Young athletes with disabilities can join a basketball league.

League of Dreams, a Bakersfield-based nonprofit organization, is taking applications for its upcoming hoops season. Athletes ages 5-22 with physical and developmental disabilities are invited to compete.

A tryout will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Terrio Edge, 3521 Alken St., just west of Fruitvale and between Rosedale Highway and Hageman Road. Athletes will work with a pediatric physical or occupational therapist to have their abilities assessed to ensure proper team placement, according to League of Dreams.

Fundraising successes have allowed League of Dreams to waive the typical $40 registration fee.

A Spring Training Barbecue for athletes, volunteers and families will be held at noon Sunday, Sept. 16, at Silver Creek Park.

The basketball season features games each Sunday from Sept. 23 to Oct. 28.

Visit the League of Dreams website or call (661) 616-9122 for registration.
