March Meet boasts fans from all over the world

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The wait is finally over. Thousands of race fans from all over the world are expected this weekend at Famoso Raceway for the much anticipated return of March Meet.

Considered the jewel of nostalgia racing, the 56th annual March Meet is burning up the raceway with more than 500 racers competing in the four-day event.

"I just enjoy watching the races and how fast they go", said 11-year-old Kate Cheek from Bakersfield. Kate and her family have been attending March Meet since Kate was a baby.

Her mom, Kelli Cheek, said it's just a great experience to bring the family together and take them to a place they all enjoy.

Organizers said they expect more than 20,000 spectators from all over the world.

"We kept track last year and we had 14 different countries represented and a lot from the East Coast," said Famoso Raceway VP of Operations Blake Bowser.

Drag racing experts say there is no better place to watch nostalgia racing than March Meet which seems to be growing each and every year.

Bowser said they had to turn away about 100 racers this year because they accommodate them in the pits and on the track, and simply ran out of space.
