BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Cal State Bakersfield head baseball coach Bill Kernen has changed his mind about retiring.

The school said Kernen, who was slated for retirement effective July 1, expressed desire to return on a year-to-year option moving forward.

Athletic director Jeff Konya said in a news release that he's happy to welcome Kernen back, saying "the only person I was comfortable replacing Bill Kernen with was Bill Kernen."

Kernen informed Konya of his desire to return during their end-of-season evaluation meeting, the school said.

The coach expressed excitement about next season's squad, which will feature eight returning starting position players and the return of the majority of the starting and relief pitchers.

"This is a special group of guys and parents, so that part of the decision was easy," Kernen said in the news release.

Kernen finishes this season with a 400-328-3 career record.
