BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Cal State Bakersfield will achieve full NCAA Division I membership effective Sept. 1, President Horace Mitchell said Wednesday.
This will make CSUB's intercollegiate sports teams eligible for NCAA postseason play.
The school initiated the move from Div. II in 2005 to mirror what former rivals Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge and UC Davis had already done, according to its website.
CSUB had to undergo an exploratory year and four transition years to meet NCAA requirements. Read the full breakdown of the Div. I transition process.
"It's been a long and arduous journey to full Div. I membership, but it's been a journey well worth making," Mitchell said in a news release.
This announcement comes shortly after four CSUB teams were saved from the chopping block. University officials announced June 1 that men's and women's golf, women's tennis and wrestling will compete next school year.
The four teams were going to be cut to help CSUB cope with a $6.4 million budget reduction for the 2010-11 academic year, but athletes, coaches, alumni and other supporters were able to raise $700,000, which is enough to support the sports for another year.
