SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Former West High Viking Ryan Mathews, is changing jersey numbers before his rookie orientation even begins.

Mathews, who wore No. 21 in both high school and college acknowledged that number should not be worn to show respect to former Charger great LaDainian Tomlinson.

So, Mathews first selected No. 33 for his rookie orientation, in part because all numbers in the 20s were taken by veterans. Now, on the eve of his orientation, Mathews is making the swtich to No. 24, last worn by defensive back Dante Hughes, a four-year veteran out of California.
