BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- President Horace Mitchell is expected to announce Thursday that California State University, Bakersfield is cutting its roster of sports.

Multiple sources, all speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday that four or five programs are on the chopping block because of budget woes.

CSUB fields 19 Div. I sports. Seven of the sports appear to be safe, because they are required for membership in the Big West athletics conference. CSUB is vying for Big West affiliation.

The apparently safe sports are men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, baseball, softball and volleyball.

Sources indicate the sports most likely to be cut are men's and women's golf, women's tennis and wrestling.

CSUB hadn't confirmed any cuts to the athletics by late Wednesday.
