Ryan Beckwith was introduced Wednesday as the Renegades' new leader. His first day on the job will be Thursday.
Beckwith graduated from California State University, Northridge in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in communications studies. Two years later, he earned a master's degree in sports management from Georgia.
At Georgia, Beckwith worked as associate director of the G-Club, developing events and outreach efforts for athletics alumni, according to Bakersfield College. He went on to work as marketing manager for UCLA athletics and in positions of increasing responsibility at Junipero Serra High School and the College of San Mateo in San Mateo.
Beckwith participated in football – receiver and kick-returner – and track at Cal State Northridge. He was on the track team at Georgia, as well.
"I see my new position at Bakersfield College as an opportunity to erase some of the stigma surrounding community colleges and community college athletics," Beckwith said in a news release. "High school athletes need to understand that community colleges provide an opportunity for development. There's not the pressure found at large universities. With Bakersfield College, they can be a better student and a better athlete."
Beckwith replaces Jan Stuebbe, who was Bakersfield College's director of athletics for 13 years. He retired in June.
