COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The Wiener Dog races were held at Coiner Park in Cottage Grove Saturday, with dozens of dachshunds dashing in races and dashing dachshunds participating in the costume contest.
The proceeds from this annual event go to the South Lane Little League and Cottage Grove Kids Club organizations. While other breeds were able to participate in the event, the wiener dog races highlighted the pint-sized pups that are short, brown and on the ground.
Aside from the races, event coordinator Shannon Witty said that their was fun for the whole family.
"We have tons of things," said Witty. "From the costume contest, races, all kinds of food and things for the family to come down to the park here."
Many of the dogs weren't aware that they were racing, so owners had to coax some of the dogs out of the starting gate. For the dogs that didn't participate in the races there were a multitude of other arenas of competition, like the most talented, best costume and owner/pooch look-alike contest.
