A search Thursday, June 21, 2012, leads to the recovery of a child's body from the Beardsley Canal in Bakersfield.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 5-year-old boy's body was pulled from a canal Thursday afternoon, a few hours after he reportedly fell into the swift-moving water.

Dominick Valencia's mother told deputies that they were walking along the Beardsley Canal near Knudsen Drive and Norris Road when he slipped, Kern County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ray Pruitt said. It's unclear if the mother and son were near or far apart at the time.

The mother, whose name was withheld, was taken from the area by ambulance after she reportedly tried saving her son.

Some of the child's belongs were found floating upstream in the canal before the water level was lowered to allow for divers.
