Woman killed by backhoe at San Jose City College

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a former student at San Jose City College was killed after she was struck by a tractor at a construction site while back on campus.

The Santa Clara County coroner identified 49-year-old Magda Gonzalez of San Jose as the woman who was hit when the backhoe tractor backed into a walkway between the college's fine arts and vocational arts buildings Tuesday morning.

Gonzalez later died at a local hospital.

The coroner's office says Gonzalez's death appears to be an accident.

San Jose Evergreen Community College Chancellor Rita Cepeda on Tuesday expressed the school's sympathies to the family of Gonzalez, a former student who had been considering going back to the school.

Classes resume at the city college on Sept. 3.

The incident remains under investigation.
