BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An elderly woman died Sunday night following a robbery.

Guadalupe Ramos, 71, left the Foods Co. grocery store on Haley Street around 7 p.m. She was walking to her vehicle when a robber came up behind her and grabbed her necklace, causing her to fall to the ground, according to police.

The robber ran off toward the southwest before entering a silver sedan similar to a 1990s Toyota Camry, police said.

Ramos was rushed to Kern Medical Center, where she died. Police didn't specify what killed her, and the coroner's office said it will perform an autopsy Tuesday.

Detectives are investigating the case as both a robbery and homicide.

The robber was described as a black man in his early 20s with a thin build. He was wearing a black cap, a black-and-gray horizontal stripped shirt, tan shorts and black tennis shoes. Police released a computer-generated composite of the suspect.

Anyone with information helpful to the investigation is asked to call police at (661) 326-3546 or the Secret Witness line at 322-4040.
