BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Nearly one month after Trivia Madrigali was shot at her home, the 51-year-old woman died at a private residence.
Her husband, DUI attorney Mark Madrigali, remains in jail, charged with attempted murder, assault with a gun and spousal abuse. He has pleaded not guilty.
Trivia Madrigali had been hospitalized at Kern Medical Center since June 12. Tuesday, she was relocated to a home on the 7700 block of Ryan Drive. Wednesday morning, she died, according to the Kern County coroner's office.
"She had a big heart, very big heart, she was very giving," said a tearful neighbor, Socorro Torres.
Torres said she'd known Trivia Madrigali for years and the two would often talk about their children and grandchildren while drinking tea. She described Madrigali as an unselfish person, always considerate of others.
"Anytime I had problems, she would come and bring me flowers and put them in a vase for me. She was that kind of person," said Torres.
During the early morning hours of June 12, police were called to the 1200 block of Telegraph Avenue. Mark Madrigali had called 911 to report that "someone's been shot" at his house. When the dispatcher asked who had been shot, Madrigali responded, "My wife. Please come over now," and hung up the phone.
Court documents state that Madrigali told police that the shooting "was an accident." The wife was found lying face down in a pool of blood on the living room floor. Police recovered numerous weapons at the home and said Mark Madrigali used a shotgun to shoot his wife.
Trivia Madrigali confided in her neighbor, Torres.
"Unfortunately, we knew things were wrong," said Torres. "I know she cared for Mark very much, she wanted to make her marriage work."
The Kern County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case in light of the death of Trivia Madrigali. It is expected to amend the charges. Mark Madrigali is being held in jail with bail set at $1.5 million.
