Vigil held for what would have been Delano girl's 13th birthday

DELANO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- Friends and family of Shaylyn Pinoliar gathered Wednesday night in Delano to mark what would have been her 13th birthday.

The vigil on the corner of Browning Road and Summer Drive, the intersection where she was hit while walking to school in November, drew a large crowd of friends and family members wanting to honor her memory.

Shaylyn's grandmother said the recent death has been extremely hard to bear, especially since she lost her husband nine years prior in a similar accident.

Shaylyn’s parents participated in the event from the upstairs porch of their home, holding candles in the dark night, in remembrance of their middle daughter.

Friends of Shaylyn said the softball team at her school will wear purple jerseys this year in her honor.

Charges have been filed against 26-year-old Blanca Leon, the driver accused of killing Shaylyn.
