BAKERSFIELD, Ore. - The riders of the Tour of California race against the clock Thursday in Bakersfield, host to the fifth stage of North America's most prominent professional bike race.
One by one, the racers will take to the 18.4-mile individual time trial course that rockets down Alfred Harrel Highway and goes to the turnaround at Lake Ming.
After navigating the forecast 89 F heat through a series of short, fast climbs, the riders face a steep climb up the China Grade toward the final half mile to the finish.
You can take part in the action Thursday at the festival at 1801 Panorama Drive from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or stake out your favorite spot along the route to cheer for the international field of riders.
