BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A Tehachapi native serving in the Navy was honored this week for being the Navy's "Outstanding New Broadcaster," according to officials at the Naval Air Facility in Misawa, Japan.

Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Erin Devenberg earned the Russell Egnor Navy Media Award for her work aboard the USS George Washington.

Devenberg said via a Navy spokesman that she grew up in Tehachapi before moving to the Midwest and Nevada. She returned to California, where she decided to join the military.

During her service, Devenberg visited the Philippines, South Korea, Australia, Guam, Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia. She's covered community relations events in those countries and covered flood relief in Thailand.

She said she plans to get a business degree and gain education in the media field while serving in the Navy.
