Southwest Bakersfield man surprised after finding robbery suspect hiding in garage
A pair of robberies has two Bakersfield neighborhoods on high alert. In both, people were at home when the suspects tried to break-in. The first happened in Southwest Bakersfield and lead to a brief police chase through the small neighborhood streets near Ashe Road and North Half Moon Drive.

Resident Shannon Coburn described what happened as a police chase ended right in front of his home. He says 3 suspects tried to run from the cops into his backyard. "They stopped, we thought it was over, two guys jumped out and jumped through the trees," says Coburn.

It all started 8:30 Wednesday morning, when Bakersfield Police got a call from a woman who said robbers had kicked in her door and was ransacking her home in the area of Newport Lane and Seapines Drive. When police got on scene, they spotted the suspects car leaving the home and chased them a few blocks away into Coburn's neighborhood. "All the suspects fled the vehicle two were taken into custody, one is still outstanding," said Sergeant Matt Pflugh of the Bakersfield Police Department.

But less than an hour after the original call Coburn went into his garage and says he got quite a surprise. "I came out this door, got about here and I could see his sweatshirt and his head ducked down," says Coburn.

Not wanting the suspect to know he'd been spotted, Coburn created a diversion. "I started going through the cabinets then made my way back inside and called 911," explained Coburn.

Within minutes, Bakersfield Police were back on-scene where they found and arrested the third suspect. Feeling safer, but still shaken up, Coburn can't believe how close he came to danger. "Its nerve wracking, they told us they had a sawed off shot gun and I don't want to mess with them. It really escalates the adrenaline," explains Coburn.

Neighbors are now calming down around here but say it's time to have a neighborhood watch meeting. The woman whose home was robbed was not injured. According to police, she hid in her bedroom while she called police. As for the suspects, all three are facing charges for weapons, burglary and evading arrest.
