San Diego County manhunt prompts evacuation of 20-plus homes

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in San Diego County have arrested a fugitive described as violent and dangerous after an eight-hour manhunt that forced the evacuation of more than 20 homes.

U-T San Diego says a SWAT team arrested 34-year-old Ramiro Espinoza at around 1:15 a.m. Friday in Imperial Beach. He remains jailed.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell says Espinoza was wanted on suspicion of attempted murder for allegedly shooting and wounding his ex-girlfriend in San Ysidro in May. Authorities say he has a history of violent crimes.

Caldwell says a fugitive task force went to arrest him at around 5 p.m. Thursday but he jumped a fence and fled.

The area was sealed off and more than 20 homes evacuated while authorities searched for Espinoza.
