BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A traffic advisory released Wednesday warns that a road closure at Renfro Road is related to the next phase of the Westside Parkway, which is already under construction.
The new highway opened just last Friday, but Louis Topete of the Thomas Roads Improvement Program said his office is wasting no time moving into the next and final phase.
"We’re so enthusiastic. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of time for celebrations. We still have a couple of miles to complete,” said Topete. "We'll take the freeway, the main line, from Allen Road to the intersection of Stockdale and Heath Road."
A major component of Phase II is building a bridge at Renfro Road, an undertaking that will cause extended diversions for drivers.
“Renfro will be closed for a good 10 or 11 months,” said Topete.
Topete said he understands the inconvenience, but is asking for patience.
“A lot of people I’m assuming take that road on a daily basis, and the fact that they'll have to go around to one of the other streets, for 11 months, I know that is a pain,” the roads official said.
Topete said he hopes drivers will keep the end goal in mind.
"With this Westside Parkway project, once it’s all done up to Stockdale and Heath, is totally going to change the way we drive in Bakersfield, especially the west side of town," he said.
Topete said drivers can expect full completion by next fall.
