Homicide investigation closed: Remains not human

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Remains found Tuesday by a homeowner west of Bakersfield prompted the Kern County Sheriff's Office to send out homicide detectives.

"The homeowner found what appeared to be a human body part," Lt. Todd Bishop said Tuesday.

Detectives weren't immediately sure if they had found human or animal remains, but a coroner's examination Wednesday morning determined the remains were not human. The case was subsequently closed.

The body part was mummified and in very poor condition, Bishop said Tuesday.

The discovery was made at a home in the 5200 block of Willard Street, which is near the Frito Lay plant off Highway 58.
