Pregnant woman killed in early morning fire

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A pregnant woman was killed early Saturday when the illegally converted smokehouse she was living in caught fire.

The fire was reported at 4:41 a.m. and took about 15 minutes to control, according to a news release from the Bakersfield Fire Department.

The victim, identified Monday by the coroner's office as 30-year-old Christine Ann Soles, was found behind a door of the temporary residence at 720 Eye St.

The unborn child's name was Christopher Kyle Holthaus, according to a coroner's office news release on Monday.

The fire was found to be accidental by arson investigators, who said some of the wood in the wood-burning stove had rolled out and started a fire in nearby items on the floor.

Investigators said the smokehouse, originally believed to be a converted garage, appeared to have been illegally converted with numerous violations.
