BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Police released a few additional details Tuesday of a shooting at a teacher's house in northeast Bakersfield.
Shawn Ibarra, 35, was fatally shot in the encounter. Police said the homeowner shot in self-defense.
Ibarra forced his way into the home on Christmas Tree Lane because of a property dispute with the homeowner's guest, police said Tuesday.
The homeowner and his guest barricaded themselves in a bedroom, and police said Tuesday that the homeowner warned Ibarra several times that he would fire his shotgun if Ibarra didn't stop trying to break into the bedroom.
The homeowner fired his gun once.
Eyewitness News has confirmed through Kern County property records that the house belongs to David Espericueta, who is listed in county personnel records as a math teacher at Foothill High School.
Police didn't specify what property was under dispute.
Kern County court records show Ibarra has been in and out of prison for at least the past 10 years for convictions ranging from possession of a controlled substance to theft and receiving stolen property. In November, he was sentenced to three years in jail for car theft but released early under AB 109, police Sgt. Joe Grubbs said.
