BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man pleaded no contest Friday in Kern County court to one count of voluntary manslaughter in the death of a 2-year-old boy. Two other charges were dismissed.

Joshuae Preston beat his then-girlfriend's son, Guillermo Alvarez, to death in June 2009. He was arrested soon after the death and charged with murder, but the case was dismissed when pathological exam results didn't come back in time.

Preston was babysitting Gina Serna's five children when he called 911 about Guillermo being unresponsive. Doctors reported the boy had bruising on his jaw, collar bone area and stomach, among other reported injuries.

Sentencing is scheduled for late June.
