EDISON, Calif. -- One person died and another was injured Friday evening when two big rig trucks hit head-on while driving on Edison Road near Highway 58, the sheriff's office said.
Officials said that both of the trucks were driving northbound on Edison Road when at around 5 p.m. Friday one of the drivers slowed to make a left turn at the intersection of Edison and Muller Road.
The other driver, later identified as Andrew Mateut, 27 of Roseville, crossed the center line into the opposite lane to try and pass the other semi-truck, which had started its left-hand turn.
Mateut's truck hit the driver's side of the other truck causing both trucks to catch fire, Sheriff's deputies at the scene told Eyewitness News.
Responding emergency crews took Mateut to the Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
The other man, identified as a 73-year-old El Centro man, was killed at the scene, officials said.
Investigators said that both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
Both trucks were completely destroyed during the crash.
