BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The use of force by a veteran Kern County probation officer on Sept. 16 in McFarland has been determined to have been within department policy.
No one was hit in the incident that happened around 5:20 p.m. in the 200 block of San Lucas Street.
According to department Chief David Kuge, Officer Stacy Crawford fired one round during a compliance check that evening.
While officers were searching the home they found Stephen Espinoza hiding in a closet. Crawford believed him to be armed and fired one round toward him when he refused to show his hands and turned toward her.
Another probationer was arrested moments earlier after trying to run away through the back yard of the residence. Jesse Sanchez, 23, was taken into custody while trying to climb a fence.
According to a department news release, items found during a search of the home included a loaded shot gun and ballistic body armor.
The finding by the incident review board clears Crawford to return to duty.
