BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A California Highway Patrol chase ended in southwest Bakersfield with an exchange of gunfire, a SWAT standoff and West High School being placed on lockdown.

The school lockdown was lifted after 5 p.m., but the standoff in the area of Belle Terrace and McDonald Way remained until around 7 p.m.

The CHP was pursuing a stolen car, police Sgt. Joe Grubbs said.

Grubbs said a suspect abandoned the car and fired on officers, and at least one officer returned fire.

The suspect, later named as 29-year-old Miguel Villanueva, was shot in the final confrontation with officers after he had been holed up in a garage for hours. Police said he was stable when transported to a hospital.

No officers were injured in the incident.
