BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A clerk was shot multiple times in his upper body Monday afternoon during a robbery at a small market on Robinson Street, just north of Highway 178 and near Haley Street.

The robber fled the La Perla Market. The Kern County Sheriff's Office hadn't identified a suspect and only had a vague description of a black man with a handgun.

The clerk's condition wasn't immediately known to Eyewitness News. The sheriff's office said the clerk was able to return fire on the robber, who may or may not have been hit.

Jess Carrillo lives near the market and expressed shock at the shooting.

"Very surprised," Carrillo said. "I've lived there 50 years. My neighbors lived there 70 years. We've never had something like this. Never. Everybody knows everybody."
