Man arrested in case of woman found dead in garage

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man was arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering his mother's friend.

Clara Basta's body was found Sept. 7 inside a garage on the 4200 block of Kilkenny Court after firefighters put out a small blaze. Police later found her car abandoned on the 100 block of South King Street.

Police had been tight-lipped about the investigation until saying Friday that they arrested 37-year-old Patrick Terrel on suspicion of murder, arson, residential burglary and grand theft auto.

Patrick Terrel is the son of Basta's friend and roommate Victoria Terrel. He's been in jail since two days after the murder, following his arrest for a probation violation.

Police didn't say Friday why they suspect Patrick Terrel of the murder, but they said he became the suspect because of interviews and physical evidence.
