Man arrested following SWAT standoff at Arvin home

ARVIN, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man has been arrested following a SWAT standoff at a home adjacent to a food packaging plant in Arvin.

Officers contacted 35-year-old Manuel Javier Carrillo during a felony assault investigation, and during the contact Carrillo allegedly brandished a broken bottle and screwdriver and barricaded himself inside the home near Bear Mountain Boulevard and Tejon Highway.

Police, with the assistance of Kern County SWAT members, forced the suspect out of the house Tuesday morning by deploying tear gas or some similar substance, sheriff's office spokesman Ray Pruitt said.

Carrillo allegedly armed himself with a stick and bit an officer on the hand before he was taken into custody.
