BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A memorial run was held this week for the family of a man who was killed in southwest Bakersfield on the morning of July 29.
Runners taking part in the event organized by Sole 2 Soul said they wanted to help Jesus "Jesse" Rios' family and help to bring awareness to running safety.
A spokesman for the store, located in the Marketplace, said, "Our goal is to raise $2,500 to help the family with the funeral costs."
By Thursday, the day of the run, 150 runners had signed up and even more were expected to take part. The store also sold headbands for $10 each and donated 100 percent of the proceeds to Rios' family.
The investigation into the accident that killed Rios is still underway. But, police said the driver who hit him on Wilson Road near Edgemont Drive likely had fallen asleep at the wheel.
A GoFundMe account has also been set up to help with funeral expenses, and Rios' employer, Chili's, will donate proceeds from sales on Aug. 12 to his family. The restaurant is located at 8950 Rosedale Highway.
