BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A local businessman is taking some time out of his busy schedule to help disadvantaged residents learn skills that could help them start their own businesses.

For the better part of his life, Dean Gardner has built his business by building things. Gardner has had success with residential and commercial construction and also builds custom stocks for rifles.

An encounter with an unemployed man on the street gave Gardner an idea. He said he wanted to help residents in the neighborhood to learn a trade.

Gardner recruited a few people he met on the street and taught them how to use woodworking tools. They chose bird feeders as their first product.

Six weeks later, the men are still showing up every day on time and working hard through the afternoons.

What makes this program different is that the men are not getting paid. Gardner said once the feeders are sold, the profit will be split equally among the group.
