LOS ANGELES (AP) — The unclaimed cremated remains of 1,656 people who died in Los Angeles County in 2009 have been buried during a simple ceremony.

A few dozen people attended the interment Wednesday at a county cemetery in Boyle Heights.

Brief prayers representing a range of faiths were read, songs were sung and mourners sprinkled flower petals on the grave.

The remains were kept for three years before being interred.

The county has been conducting such burials since 1896.
