Kern County DA: Jury wants death penalty for ganster in 'disrespect' killing

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A jury voted to impose the death sentence Tuesday while convicting a gangster for murder.

Francisco Beltran Jr. killed Ruben Tafoya in January 2010 on Columbus Street "over an act of perceived disrespect by the victim," the Kern County District Attorney's Office said.

In December 2009, Beltran shot another man, Antonio Galvan, and severely wounded him during a robbery.

Beltran was an active member of the Varrio Baker Sureno Gang, according to the District Attorney's office.

He was convicted of first-degree murder for the benefit of a gang, dissuading a witness, attempted murder and robbery.

Beltran is scheduled for sentencing in November.
