TEHACHAPI, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An inmate from Kern County is suspected of killing a fellow inmate within his first two days at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.

Ladwright Smith, 39, was found unresponsive Sunday afternoon in his cell. He was pronounced dead within the hour.

Tuesday, the coroner's office said Smith died of strangulation and blunt-force head trauma.

Prison investigators named 28-year-old Anthony Taylor as the suspect. Taylor was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for the 2006 shooting at Rockin’ Rodeo. He only arrived at CCI on Friday.

Smith was serving an eight-year sentence out of San Bernardino County for spousal abuse.

Prison officials didn't say what motivated the alleged attack.
