Hiker collapses, dies during trip to Breckenridge Mountain

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A woman collapsed and died Sunday morning while camping with family on Breckenridge Mountain, Kern County Fire and Rescue officials said.

Officials said that the 47-year-old woman and her mother went out on a hike at around 8 a.m. Sunday while the rest of their camping group was out hunting.

About 200 yards from their campsite the woman told her mother she felt sick and collapsed.

Kern Fire Capt. Sean Collins said the mother went to get help, but had to travel over an hour to get cell reception. The woman had died by the time medical crews arrived on scene at around 10:20 a.m. Sunday.

The sheriff's office said they used a helicopter to retrieve the body, as the area was hard to get to.
