BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A grass fire Thursday afternoon started behind a structure off Granite Road in the Woody area. Locals took quick action to stop the fire's spread, according to the Kern County Fire Department, but the fire jumped the road and followed Pine Mountain Road.

The California Highway Patrol was called in to block traffic around 2 p.m. and crews from the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service joined the fight. With the assistance of five fixed-wing air tankers, two helicopters and three dozers to protect structures, the fire was stopped at 242 acres.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
