BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A crash Friday morning off Highway 99 near the ramp at White Lane landed a suspected carjacker in jail.

The suspect was seen speeding and didn’t slow down enough for the exit ramp before crashing into the center of the ramp area. Debris from that crash hit other vehicles entering the ramp.

Fellow driver Larry Puryear called 911 to report the crash. He got out of his SUV to help direct traffic while waiting for police.

Puryear said the man who had just crashed then carjacked his 2013 Toyota Sequoia.

“I was a little bit irritated at the fact that my concern was for the accident and his person, to make sure that he was OK. Then, out of reciprocation of that, he steals my car,” Puryear said.

Police later arrested 23-year-old Carl Shepherd as the carjacking suspect.
