Authorities are asking the people of Kern County to approach the Fourth of July holiday in a legal and safe manner. Violators face fines and the risk of serious injury.

Task force members will be on patrol this week for people using fireworks in an illegal way. Concerned citizens can contact the fireworks hotline at (661) 868-6070 between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m. July 3-5.

Only fireworks displaying the California Fire Marshall Safe and Sane fireworks seal that are purchased from a local, licensed vendor are permitted, during specified times. Fireworks violations could bring up to a $1,500 fine.

All Piccolo Pete or other whistling-type fireworks, and ground bloom-type fireworks are illegal for sale or use in Bakersfield, according to the city fire department.

The Kern County Fire Department advises people to avoid the danger of setting off their own fireworks and instead attend one of these public displays:

July 2

Kiwanis Club of Delano - fireworks begin at sundown, north end of the Delano Municipal Airport

July 3

Buttonwillow Recreation and Park District - gate open at 6:30 p.m., Buttonwillow Unified School Football Field

Shafter Chamber of Commerce - gates open at 6 p.m., Shafter High School Football Field & Sports Complex

Wasco Chamber of Commerce - 4-11 p.m., Waso High School

McFarland - opening at 5 p.m., fireworks at 9, 100 South Second St.

July 4

Bakersfield - 6-9:30 p.m., The Park at River Walk

Bakersfield Country Club

Bakersfield Blaze vs. Modesto - after the game, Sam Lynn Ballpark

Tehachapi - 7-10 p.m., Coy Burnett Stadium

Taft Chamber of Commerce - 4-10 p.m., Supply Road and Main Street

July 5

Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce - 9-10 p.m., Engineer's Point

Kern County Raceway - grandstands open at 4 p.m. with racing at 7, fireworks to follow, 13500 Raceway Blvd.
