The minimum citation for possessing an illegal firework is $1,500. Those caught misusing or altering Safe and Sane fireworks, as well as using fireworks outside the designated times, will face a $500 fine, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

A temporary fire department hotline has been set up at (661) 868-6070 for reporting illegal fireworks during July 3 and 4.
