BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — February will be declared Safely Surrendered Baby Awareness Month by the Kern County Board of Supervisors.

Activities are planned throughout the month to raise awareness of the Safely Surrendered Baby Law, a local coalition said.

Under state law since 2006, a parent or other person with lawful custody can surrender their baby within three days of birth, confidentially and without fear of arrest or prosecution for abandonment.

The baby must be taken to a fire station or hospital emergency room. The law's intent is to save infants who otherwise could be dumped and left to die.

The baby will be placed in foster care or a pre-adoptive home.

Thirty-nine babies have been safely surrendered in Kern County under the law.
