James Willis Johnson is sentenced during a court hearing in Bakersfield, Calif., Tuesday, May 7, 2013, to 25 years to life in prison for second-degree murder of his baby.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A father has been sentenced for killing his 34-day-old boy, who died with untreated and infected third-degree burns, broken limbs and head injuries.

James Willis Johnson will serve 25 years to life in prison, and six years if he's paroled early. Johnson was convicted by a Kern County jury last month of second-degree murder.

Johnson was arrested along with the baby's mother, Denise Belmonte. She was sentenced in January under a plea agreement for voluntary manslaughter to 15 years in prison.

The baby died in 2010 in an apartment his parents shared on Idaho Street.
