Drunk driving suspected in crash that killed pregnant woman, unborn child

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspected drunk driving after a deadly crash in south Bakersfield.

Authorities say Joseph Maine of Bakersfield may have been driving under the influence of alcohol when his GMC Sierra pickup truck collided with a Ford Fusion at the intersection at Monitor Street and Fairview Road around 12:40 a.m. Friday.

One pregnant woman in the Fusion, identified by the Kern County coroner's Office as 25-year-old Vanessa Carillo, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her unborn baby girl did not survive the crash.

Two others in Fusion were sent a local hospital with moderate injuries.

Maine is facing DUI charges, as well as vehicular manslaughter.

Four men in the truck complained of pain, and three people in the car suffered moderate injuries.
