Defense: Bell official overpaid, but not criminal

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Angela Spaccia may have been overpaid in her job as assistant city manager of Bell but her lawyer has argued that was not a crime.

Attorney Harland Braun asked jurors during closing arguments Thursday whether any of them would turn down a huge salary increase and say they weren't worth it.

Braun says the amounts of money paid to Spaccia and her boss, Robert Rizzo, were staggering, but no crime was committed.

He pointed to Rizzo as the real culprit in the Bell scandal and disclosed to jurors, who had not been told previously, that the former Bell city manager had made a plea deal.

Braun said Rizzo should have testified in Spaccia's trial.
