BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County Fire Department kept hopping Thursday morning with a pair of residential fires.

A family of eight was displaced when their home on Panama Road in Lamont went up in flames around 7:30 a.m. Fire Capt. Eric Coughren said crews arrived to a fully engulfed home with flames spewing from the doors and windows.

Coughren said the fire started in the laundry area, but the cause was not immediately known.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross responded with aid for the family.

Less than two hours later, crews were called to a fire on South Union Avenue in Bakersfield. Firefighters arrived to a 50 percent involved abandoned mobile home with flames shooting from the roof.

Coughren said the cause is under investigation.
