DELANO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A utility rate hike was passed Monday by the City Council despite a petition effort by citizens opposing the increase.

Residents protested the rate hike, reportedly collecting hundreds of signatures on a petition. City manager Maribel Reyna told Eyewitness News on Friday that the signatures were counted and officials found too many signatures that couldn't be verified. So, Reyna said, the petition failed.

City Council voted unanimously to pass the hike, which is supposed to bump rates by $65 over the next five years - $15 the first year and $10 in each of the next four years.
